What is Global Perspectives?

IMG_5383_edited.jpg

Global Perspectives is a fully integrated program that runs out of Innisdale Secondary School in coordination with the city of Barrie and Simcoe County District School Board. This program runs in the second semester of a student’s grade 11 year, but Global becomes a priority well before grade 11 commences. This academically challenging program includes 5 courses, 4 being grade 11 university-level, and 1 being a grade 12 university-level course. The credits received by Globalites include Music, English, World Religions, World Issues, and Politics.

Unique Opportunity

History

Unlike any other program in the country, Global presents students with the unique opportunity to experience and examine different perspectives and ways of life around the world. Global Perspectives takes students on a 2 week-long trip to Cuba, and a month-long exchange trip to Germany. Globalites also have the opportunity to welcome a German student into their homes for a month. All these elements of Global make it one of a kind and special to each person that joins the Global family.

In 1999, Dave Morrison (the “godfather” of Global) started the program to give students the chance to explore the world in an exciting and new way. The goal was for students to step out of their bubble and learn about life beyond Canada. Running successfully for 21 years now, Global Perspectives has proven to improve student’s overall academic abilities, high school experience, and it prepares students for post-secondary education workloads.

Application

Although Global Perspectives starts in February of student’s grade 11 year, the excitement and anticipation leading up to the program starts all the way back in grade 10. In order to be one of the 28 lucky students accepted into Global Perspectives, you are required to apply and go through an interviewing process. Once application forms are completed and sent to Mr.Toole (lead teacher of Global), students anxiously await a call from Mr.Toole about their interview date and time. After practicing answers to the possible questions the panel of teachers might ask, it is time for the student’s interviews. After that, students wait some more to hear from Mr.Toole about whether or not they will be accepted into the program.

Host a German Partner!

In September of grade 11, students get introduced to the rest of the class and get to see who their German partner will be. A few short weeks later, the Canadian students gather in front of Innisdale waiting to meet and welcome their German partner. All the partnerships were well paired, and it’s safe to say that we have all become lifelong friends. Taking in a German student was a great experience and was the highlight of the year for the Global class of 2020.

Once the Germans tearfully left Canada, Globalites were left anticipating the start of the academic portion of the program. When the wide-eyed, optimistic and naive Globalites walked into portable 11 on the first day, our worlds were immediately changed. Right from the start, we were bombarded with assignments and deadlines we had to meet. Slowly getting to know our teachers and each other, we became a family. Along with smaller assignments for each class, we were introduced to big integrated assignments such as Politics of Self, Little Big Pitch, C2N, and the notoriously daunting ISU. After slowly working through each project, our class had started to plan for our trips to Cuba and Germany.

Typically in April, the Global class is rewarded for their hard work in the first section of the semester with a trip to Cuba. After that, we would continue working on other assignments such as the Shaman, website, and Global Presents all while finishing the ISU. Once we finished all our course work, we would finally be taken to Germany for a month-long trip, staying with our German exchange partners. In Germany, we would’ve been staying in Barrie’s twin city; Zweibruken. Unfortunately, the Global class of 2020 was unable to experience the true potential Global Perspectives has to offer.

Pandemic Curveball

Our year was interrupted by the unprecedented and unfortunate outbreak of COVID-19. Along with teacher strikes, this pandemic put our plans and efforts on pause. March 13, 2020 (also coincidentally Friday the 13), our class found out we were not able to travel to Cuba. This was a very sad and tear-filled day in portable 11. This day also brought our class closer together as we collectively felt the same sorrow and disappointment. Our once in a lifetime chance at this program had fallen through. From that day on, our class (as well as the rest of the world) had to adapt to a new kind of learning. Online classes/ learning was hard to adapt to at first and was definitely a unique experience. As a class, we would like to thank our amazing teachers, Mr. Toole, Mr. Babcock, Mr. Torlée, and Ms.Parnell, for working overtime to try to make our Global experience the best it could be under the circumstances we were given.

Although our year was cut short, the Global class of 2020 will not be forgotten, as we have all become one big family.
