Independent study units

Feared by many incoming Globalites long before even entering the program, the Independent Study Unit is the largest assignment students will face all semester. This infamous project is integrated, spanning all 5 courses, and is worth 20% of the final grade. For their ISU, students are asked to select a world issue that is of interest to them. Then, they must extensively research their chosen issue and produce a report that can be anywhere from 20 to over 100 pages. As daunting as this sounds, students are able to tackle the assignment by following a schedule with deadlines for each part, and by methodically working through each section. Students are given requirements for what to cover, including the significance and background of the issue, international organizations involved, interviews with experts, connection to politics and religion, and three focused case studies, as well as many others. By consistently working through this assignment over the course of the semester, and by utilizing the guidance of their assigned advisor, students are able to complete this project and display it on the website for the public and future Globalites to see.
