Germans in Canada

Germans in Canada

September 12, 2019 - October 9, 2019

The Exchange

On the afternoon of September 12th, all the global students waited anxiously outside Innisdale with their signs ready to meet their German exchange partners for the first time and welcome them to Canada. No one in the class knew each other very well, but we were all ready to become close friends. Our Germans made this easier and everyone made many memories together. Each partnership had many adventures together and formed a tight bond for life. Hanging out as small groups or together as one big group, the whole class became closer.

To recap the amazing moments the Canadian and German students shared, Sarah Steadman and Evan Jasztrab created a montage for the German Goodbye Party.

TRIPS

The German students had the opportunity to go on many different trips while we were at school, travelling all around Ontario from Barrie to Toronto, Niagra, Algonquin Park, and Collingwood. The Global students had the opportunity to join our partners on two trips of our choosing. This was an amazing experience allowing the group to bond on these adventures together. Along with the trips organized by the school, we planned some of our own little trips that allowed our groups to bond and get to know each other better. We all met at the Georgian Mall and went to Halloween Haunt at Canada’s Wonderland too. There were also many other trips students took with their partners individually.

The Germans' Journey

Arrival

Toronto

Barrie City Council

Upon arrival on September 12, the German students were greeted with open arms at Innisdale Secondary as the bus from Pearson Airport rolled in. This day marked the German's first night in Canada.

Despite the jet lag, both Canadian and German students dressed up to attend a Barrie City Council meeting on September 13. At the meeting, the German students were formally greeted by the council and Mayor John Tory

Due to the city of Toronto being so vast with only so much to do in one day, the program decided to split the Toronto trip into two. The first trip consisted of visiting the UofT campus, Kensington Market, the Art Gallery of Ontario, and the Eaton Centre. While on the second trip Germans took photos in the Distillery District, CN Tower and the Toronto Zoo.

The Big Trip

Niagara Falls

At Algonquin, the students hiked through the trails of the beautiful park digesting the magnificent scenery.

On September 30th the Germans woke up very early to depart on their big trip to Ottawa, Montreal & Quebec City. While there, the German's ate at the famous Big Apple Cafe and visited historic landmarks.

During the final days of the German's stay in Canada, the students took a bus to Niagara Falls. While at the Falls students took the famous boat, the Hornblower, to get a close up of the spectacular scene. They also got the opportunity to tour tunnels behind the waterfall, and finally had time to tour the city of Niagara Falls.

Departure

Our new German friends became part of our families. Our time together went by too fast and before we knew it we were all back outside Innisdale once again getting emotional having to say goodbye to our partners. We all watched and waved as their bus drove away, but we looked forward to seeing them in a short 230 days (which unfortunately never happened).

A Special Message from the Global 2020 Class

To our dear German friends,

We miss you guys so much, however due to COVID-19 we unfortunately could not travel to Germany this year. The strong bonds and memories we all have created will not be forgotten. If we cannot not go through the program in the future, there are some Canadians thinking of going through vacations sometime in years to come. Until then, we miss you guys, and goodbye for now.

Lots of love, your favourite Canadians

An unsere deutschen Freunde,
