The Disproportionate Rates of Suicide Within Indigenous Communities

Ffion Krommus

For a long period of our society’s history, indigenous people suffered systemic abuse that continues to affect communities today. Though progress has been made, the irreversible damage caused by many forms of cultural and racial genocide at the hands of colonizers has left many First Nations plagued with alarming and disproportionate suicide rates. Indigenous communities face social epidemics like these on a global scale. This essay explores the insulating factors and potential solutions for this inordinate rise in suicide within First Nations as they differ across the world, and sheds light on the importance of indigenous life promotion.  First Nations have always existed as a much needed body on this earth. Choosing not to educate and act in the name of First Nations autonomy and preservation would be an astronomical tragedy and mistake.
