Racism in Sport: The Generational Perpetuation of Racist Ideology in Athletics
Dustin Hales
Systemic racism is a major issue in sports and athletics on a global scale. It seems there have been few significant gains made to diminish and eliminate the issue over the last century despite the efforts of many to do so. Systemic racism is found in global sporting institutions and organizations, found in the actions of fans, players, coaches, owners, sponsors, media, and even game officials. This is not an issue that exists only at the professional level of sport, but at the amateur level as well, including children’s athletics. My study follows several of these situations from all over the world. I address what some individuals and groups are doing to combat the issue, as well as add my own thoughts on the future. These issues have become particularly relevant in 2020, even more so since I concluded my writing of this paper. As we move to collectively address how the world of athletics has contributed to the perpetuation of racist ideology, it is important to acknowledge that with a concerted effort, global sports can also play a key role in deconstructing systemic racism and leading the way towards a more just and respectful world where equality prevails.
