Favourite Global Memory:

My favourite global memory was the second day of school, period 5, when Mr. Babcock simply took an entire class period to explain every item in the portable and its back story. Strangely enough it was a perfect introduction to the awesome mix of being goofy and being educational that global is all about. It also helped me understand the teachers dynamic and more about the teachers based on which items they want displayed. The slow pace of explaining the items in the room was also a welcomed cognitive break from the stress of the second day. Though it may have been a small moment, it was a memorable one.

Unexpected Lessons Learned from Global:

I had expected for the entire semester to be so academically oriented that I gave up many of my extracurricular activities in preparation for global. This taught me the unexpected lesson that the things that I thought would derail me from my homework were the exact things that were pushing me forward. The experience in global taught me that having a balance of interests and pastimes is crucial when maintaining productivity and good mental health.

What Does Global Mean to You?

Even though my year didn’t get to fully complete the true global experience, the program and all the people involved will always hold a special place in my heart. Global to me means family. It means putting aside your differences in order to have an academic discussion where everyone’s opinion is recognized.

Why did you Apply to Global?

I applied for a multitude of reasons to be honest. I applied to global in a pursuit to be surrounded by peers who would push me and challenge me to do better. I applied because I was interested in travelling and meeting new people from different countries. I applied because of the amazing recommendations from friends and family who raved about how incredible the program was. All in all, I am so thankful for my application because it was a life changing experience.

What did you enjoy most about online school?

The thing I enjoyed most about online school was the freedom to choose my own sleep schedule. Meaning that I could sleep in as late as I wanted. Unfortunately, this became a problem when there were google meets in the morning. One time I had to hastily join late in my pajamas. Sorry Mr. Torlee.

Intentional Ignorance of Culture: The Lasting Impacts of Colonial Attitudes

Colonization has been praised for its economic developments of so-called “primitive societies”, the spread of “morally right” Judeo-Christian beliefs and effective modes of governance. To many, this phenomenon was simply a justified reality of history. Invasion, genocide and slavery were justified through percieved racial, religious and intellectual authority. The prioritization of the importance of the economy over Indigenous or environmental well-being has been evident in every case of colonization. The importance of trade, exploitation of resources and increase of material wealth for the colonizers was and is continuously legitimized. The modern day ramifications of colonialism have resulted in gross human rights violations for Indigenous peoples and ultimately, affect everyone. Indigenous people around the world have faced oppression, marginalization and exploitation suffered at the hands of their oppressors. But before reconciliation can be found, reparations of the past must be acknowledged.
