Favourite Global Memory:

It’s very difficult to choose just one memory, but I have a few which will be very hard to forget. The first is on the last day before March Break when Mr. Babcock decided to explore what was in the ceiling and he found a creepy doll and a pair of underwear. Everyone was laughing so hard, and it felt like we as a class became closer at that moment. The second memory which is one of my favourites is the Martin Luther skit that Tynan and I did for religion class. He dressed up as Martin Luther’s wife and I dressed up as Abraham Lincoln, and we pretended we were valley girls participating in an afterlife jogging club. I know it sounds crazy, but I think it worked. The final memory which is going to stick with me for a long time is all of the times that I went to Starbucks at lunch with Quiana, Kendra, and Claire. The four of us got along so well, and it was so fun to joke around and spend too much money on coffee with them.

Unexpected Lessons Learned from Global:

Don’t be afraid to try ‘out of the box’ presentation methods. Before this semester I was very stuck in my realm of powerpoints and speeches, but I knew that to do well in Global, I had to push it one step further. I was able to try so many different methods of conveying information and I even wrote a rap for one of the politics projects. I’m definitely going to continue to try so many more types of presentations next semester.

What Does Global Mean to You?

Global to me means a space where everyone is at a certain academic standard, and therefore class discussions are very interesting and consist of many different perspectives. It also is a group of people who are all fun-loving and excited to travel.

Why did you Apply to Global?

I applied to Global because I am a huge politics nerd, and when I read the list of courses we would be taking I thought they were all so interesting. Additionally, I have always wanted to participate in an exchange program, so this looked like the perfect fit for me.

Describe Global in 3 Words:

Unexpected, exciting, unforgettable

What did you enjoy most about online school?

I wouldn’t say I necessarily enjoyed online school, but there were some things that I appreciated about it. Not having to be at school for a scheduled period of time each day allowed me to really focus on making my ISU the best it could be. I’m not sure if I would have achieved the same result from it if I had been going to school every day.

The Decline of Democracy and its Impacts on Human Rights

Since the end of the Cold War a wave of democratic reversal has swept across the world, with it bringing many abuses of the human rights which we are guaranteed in the United Nations Declaration of Human Rights. While this trend towards authoritarianism can affect many different groups and cultures, it is often political, cultural, ethnic, or religious minorities that face the brunt of this abuse. In this Independent Study Unit, I discuss the nations which have begun to shift towards authoritarianism, what allowed them to be successful in doing so, and the impacts that these changes to political systems in nations all around the globe are having on those who are already at an increased level of disadvantage.
