Favourite Global Memory:

My favourite Global memory was when I got to travel to Toronto with the German students in September.  This has to be my favourite memory because I got to go up the CN Tower, which I have never done before, as well as visit the Distillery District in east Toronto.

Unexpected Lessons Learned from Global:

I would say that an unexpected lesson I learned from Global is to never underestimate the amount of work you can do in a short period of time. Before Global, I would have never been able to get the amount of work done that I did this semester, and because of Global I learned that I have a whole other level of productivity when it comes to schoolwork.

What Does Global Mean to You?

Global to me is a special program where 28 kids from different schools meet in a portable and stay there for hopefully the entire semester.  Global is about establishing international friendships between adults and kids and learning more about each other at the same time.

Why did you Apply to Global?

I first heard about Global from my aunt Karen. She told me more about what the program offered and what a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity it was.  After I went onto the Innisdale website and printed off the application, then I started going through the questions.  I knew from what kind of questions the application was asking that this was no ordinary school program and it had to be something special.  I faxed my form to the school and got invited to an interview.  The interview was fun and I enjoyed talking to Mr. Toole, Mr. Torlee, and Mr. Babcock. I didn’t expect to get into Global, and when Mr. Toole called me and told me I had got in, I was really scared and excited at the same time because I wasn’t exactly sure what I had gotten myself into, but I was eager to find out.

Describe Global in 3 Words:

Different, Intense, Engaging

What did you enjoy most about online school?

I enjoyed the freedom around what times I wanted to do my school work. I could do work in the middle of the night if I really wanted to, or I could do it later in the afternoon after I woke up. Being able to do work whenever I wanted was something I really enjoyed.

Racism in Sport: The Generational Perpetuation of Racist Ideology in Athletics

Systemic racism is a major issue in sports and athletics on a global scale.  It seems there have been few significant gains made to diminish and eliminate the issue over the last century despite the efforts of many to do so.  Systemic racism is found in global sporting institutions and organizations, found in the actions of fans, players, coaches, owners, sponsors, media, and even game officials.  This is not an issue that exists only at the professional level of sport, but at the amateur level as well, including children’s athletics.  My study follows several of these situations from all over the world.  I address what some individuals and groups are doing to combat the issue, as well as add my own thoughts on the future. These issues have become particularly relevant in 2020, even more so since I concluded my writing of this paper.  As we move to collectively address how the world of athletics has contributed to the perpetuation of racist ideology, it is important to acknowledge that with a concerted effort, global sports can also play a key role in deconstructing systemic racism and leading the way towards a more just and respectful world where equality prevails.
