Favourite Global Memory:
My favourite Global memory was our trip to Stratford with our German exchange partners. This small theatre town has always been a part of my life, so it was really nice to bring my new friends there and show them all my favourite spots. There were so many of us (11 to be exact) walking through the thin streets as a massive clump, trying to fit into little local shops. We all had lunch together at the cutest little diner, and chatted about ourselves, teaching one another about Germany, Canada, and our personal experiences with the exchange. Surprisingly, my favourite part of the day must have been the bus ride. We had a few hours to kill with nothing but each other's company, and between MASH with Sarah, music recommendations with Felix, helping Jonas to list all 50 US states from memory, and Torben falling asleep hugging a 2-liter bottle of Dr. Pepper, I think we amused ourselves quite well.
Unexpected Lessons Learned from Global:
As someone who has always been very mark-driven, and academically oriented, I had prepared myself to abandon everything outside of assignments and homework as I entered Global. I quickly realized that this was a very unhealthy way of approaching the semester. I learned that it is nearly impossible to submit your best work when your mental health has fallen behind. When you are low and struggling, nothing you produce will ever feel like enough. This lack of confidence, motivation, and stability can really take away from the experience that truly is Global. The sooner that you decide to put yourself and your health first, and take the program for an adventure rather than a test, the sooner you will be happy, productive, and able to produce work that YOU are proud of.
What Does Global Mean to You?
To me, Global means opening yourself to new experiences, lessons, and opportunities. The program will throw a lot of new things at you, and it is crucial that you are willing to learn, willing to be wrong, and willing to grow. Global means thinking critically, exploring all avenues, and checking your own biases.
Why did you Apply to Global?
I have been planning to apply for global since elementary school. In both my personal and academic life, I have always been passionate about politics and activism, culture and the arts, and the deep value of travel and human connection. The global program perfectly combines all of my core interests, making the application the obvious choice for me. Beyond this, Global Perspectives has challenged me in a way that I have never experienced, while also providing me with the independence and creative freedom that allows me to thrive academically.
Describe Global in 3 Words:
Wild, Interesting, open-minded
What did you enjoy most about online school?
The transition to online schooling has been a hard one for all Global students. Not only are we missing our travel experiences, but we have lost the group dynamic and guest speakers that made us all so eager to learn and participate. The period that Rob Ruttan spent in our class speaking of philosophy and the origins of religious thought really sparked something in me, and I have now started to shift my post-secondary plan to incorporate the philosophy of political thought and human development. For me, the maintenance of guest appearances through zoom calls has been a wonderful addition to our online schooling. Beyond this, I have greatly enjoyed being able to work outdoors. As someone very prone to anxiety, it has been greatly beneficial to power through daunting projects with the sun shining, the shelter of trees, and a soft breeze.

The Disproportionate Rates of Suicide Within Indigenous Communities
For a long period of our society’s history, indigenous people suffered systemic abuse that continues to affect communities today. Though progress has been made, the irreversible damage caused by many forms of cultural and racial genocide at the hands of colonizers has left many First Nations plagued with alarming and disproportionate suicide rates. Indigenous communities face social epidemics like these on a global scale. This essay explores the insulating factors and potential solutions for this inordinate rise in suicide within First Nations as they differ across the world, and sheds light on the importance of indigenous life promotion. First Nations have always existed as a much needed body on this earth. Choosing not to educate and act in the name of First Nations autonomy and preservation would be an astronomical tragedy and mistake.
